The Long Range Scout Jacket 2.0 is a lightweight and easily portable jacket designed for breaks and outdoor activities. It packs down into a small size and weighs only about one kilogram. The jacket is designed to be worn over other clothing and features a reversible design, allowing it to be worn on either side.
It functions as a long jacket that protects the thighs and legs but can also be fastened to a hip-length jacket for more freedom of movement when needed.
The M05 Metsäkuvio blends well with the cooler forest landscapes of late summer, while the M05 Lumikuvio helps with camouflage in snowy forest terrains. Many users appreciate the M05 Metsäkuvio jacket for autumn deer stalking, while the M05 Lumikuvio is popular in winter for activities like upland game bird hunting or lynx tracking.
In 2021, Mikko Kettunen from Karu Survival was caught in a snowstorm while hiking in Scotland. Other unprepared hiking groups were rescued by helicopter, but Kettunen survived the storm overnight with the added protection of the Long Range Scout Jacket.
The jacket’s popularity is no accident. Its design has benefited from feedback, improvements, and field testing in real-world conditions. Every detail has been carefully considered, from material choice and color scheme to insulation properties and the jacket’s cut. The result is a functional, comfortable, and durable jacket that can withstand even the harshest conditions.
Whether you are an avid hunter, hiker, or simply looking for a reliable, warm jacket for cold weather, the M05 Metsäkuvio/M05 Lumikuvio Long Range Scout Jacket is an excellent choice. Originally designed for the Finnish military special forces, this jacket has become a favorite for many outdoor enthusiasts.
The M05 Metsäkuvio/M05 Lumikuvio Long Range Scout Jacket is more than just a piece of clothing – it is an investment in comfort, safety, and performance. Built to last, it retains its color and quality even after years of use.
History of the M05 Camouflage The M05 camouflage pattern was developed by the Finnish Defence Forces in collaboration with the Finnish Forest Research Institute. The institute captured images of various forest types from the Northern Hemisphere, which were simplified into a four-color pattern. The dark gray color was added to mimic the shadows cast by trees in the forest.
The same pattern is used across all M05 camouflage versions, with color variations. In the M05 Frost Camouflage, the light green leaves of the original pattern are replaced by frost gray. The M05 Snow Camouflage is printed on a snow-white background with dark gray M05 forest pattern elements.
In addition to its visible wavelength compatibility with forest landscapes, the fabric uses special infrared (IR) compatible colors, ensuring that the jacket reflects the same infrared wavelengths as a Finnish forest. As a result, the user blends into the forest background and is harder to distinguish when viewed through infrared binoculars or infrared cameras. It has been scientifically proven that the Finnish Defence Forces’ M05 camouflage blends into Finnish forests better than any other pattern.
Development The original Long Range Scout Jacket was developed by Major Heikki Siiropää of the Finnish Paratroopers in the 1960s. He created the first version of the jacket from light nylon fabric purchased from a fabric store. The goal was to keep the jacket’s weight under one kilogram and make it easy to pack into a small space.
In the 1980s, the jacket became more common, now made from cotton/polyester fabric. However, its packability was worse, and its weight was significantly higher than the original.
Origopro began reproducing the Long Range Scout Jacket in 2015, and since then, it has proven to be a reliable companion for many adventurers.
The jacket’s development took a significant leap when Origopro incorporated USA-made Climashield Apex insulation from Harvest Consumer Insulation Ltd., based in Tennessee. This insulation is also used in the U.S. Army’s extreme cold weather gear.
The jacket evolved into the modern 2.0 “Survival and Rescue” version, considering years of experience in survival and hunting in extreme cold conditions. Mika Kalakoski, leader of the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s 2019 Antarctic expedition, contributed to the development.
Materials The SurRes Long Range Scout Jacket 2.0 is made from carbon-reinforced polyamide Ripstop fabric (98% PA, 2% carbon), making it incredibly durable in even the most challenging conditions. The carbon fiber also makes the fabric conductive, preventing static electricity buildup.
The insulation used is USA-made Climashield® Apex 3oz (102g/m²) polyester, offering excellent warmth in cold conditions. This insulation is also used by the U.S. Army in their sleeping bags and extreme cold weather gear. The insulation is made from long, cross-layered filament fibers, making it highly durable and efficient.
The jacket is often referred to as a “reversible jacket,” “turncoat,” “rest jacket,” or “lookout jacket,” known for its versatility.
The 2XL version of the jacket weighs 990g and fits into a 10L packing sack.
The jacket features a 30x90mm Velcro strip along the front placket for additional customization
